Support Starbucks

February 4th, 2012
I never thought much about Starbucks, but I just learned that some folks are planning to boycott Starbucks on Valentine's Day. Why? Because Starbucks refuses to prohibit the *legal* concealed carry of firearms where allowed by local law. In other words, Starbucks does not take the law into its own hands. For this, some apparently feel they should be punished.

I think Starbucks should be applauded and supported.

A little experiment

January 26th, 2012
I am on the second day of my experiment in doing without my mobile phone.

I don't get out much these days and don't have to commute. So my mobile phone has been getting less voice usage and I wondered if I could get away with powering it off entirely. I already make business calls using my iPod Touch using either Line2 or Viber and so voice is covered.

If this works out, I will retire my gen-2 Touch and get a new iPod Touch. My niece got one for Christmas and I like the fact that it now has a camera.

Stupid hiker tricks

November 9th, 2011
Yet another case of lost hikers. Fortunately, this one ended well with a rescue. However, it did tie up emergency services personnel and resources including the HFD helicopter. What's really ridiculous is that this occurred on one of the least challenging trails on O`ahu, the Aiea Loop Trail.

As always, there are lessons to be learned, although no one ever seems to. In all the recent incidents, I am struck by one thing that was consistent. The hikers had no food or water and only the light clothing they were wearing.

Whenever I go on a hike, even an easy trail that I've done many times like Aiea Loop, I take at the minimum a liter of water, some snacks that vary from granola bars to Spam musubi to PB&J sandwiches, a poncho and extra pair of socks. Also, I bring my cellphone and a small flashlight. I also always have a pocketknife and a lighter with me unless I'm in the shower. That's my bare minimum. Geeky? Yes. But try spending a night outside with any less.

Another lesson learned, from this case in particular, is to stay on the trail and while others may disagree, I say "do not trust a GPS". It is a poor substitute for map, compass and orienteering skills. Search and rescue people will tell you horror stories about people following a GPS to their disaster.

A standing rule is to always leave a hike plan — destination, route and expected time of return — with a responsible person. Adding to this, I recommend a simple check of the weather report. Lastly, consider your physical condition. Be honest with yourself. There have already been a couple of cases this year where a hunter and a hiker had heart attacks out on the trail.

Being safe isn't dorky. It's a lot more fun than having to be identified by next of kin.

Not-so smartphone

June 6th, 2011
I think I am finally fed up with my Motorola Cliq. Beyond the Motoblur crapware and Motorola's lack of updates to Android for this apparently abandoned device, it has become increasingly unstable. I have been back on a cheap Samsung non-smartphone for a week and appreciate its battery life and reliable responsiveness.

I do miss being able to use Line2 and Google Voice, but for now, I'll survive.

Quality journalism

May 16th, 2011
Tragic incident, but, an article on KITV's website makes me wonder if people actually think about what they write. It reports, "Paramedics treated the woman and took her to a hospital. Police did not release her condition." Okay. Pretty normal so far. The next paragraph says, "Police arrested the man on suspicion of second-degree murder." If he's arrested for murder, I can pretty well guess the condition of the woman. Don't need to be one of the geniuses on CSI to figure that out.
